Another Seal Day

Took advantage of a break in the cloud to take my swim today. Well I say swim, the tide was well out and it was more of a dip in water that, in typical Atlantic style, was an anti social level of cold. Still it was one of those times I love; when the water has a soft swell that moves serenely by. A mirror, unbroken by waves, irresistible to me and, it seems, the two seals who are increasingly showing an interest in my visits to their patch.

I have to confess, I usually only catch a head swimming above the water at a distance. They see me, I see them and that’s it. A healthy distance kept all round. Today, however, it was different. Perhaps it was because I had been playing in the shallows, laying flat in the water and pulling myself along with my forearms to be with a shoal of fish who were more than curious at my behaviour. The seals were also curious as to what I was up to, and I suddenly was aware of one of them swimming towards me. I have to admit I was spooked by its direct line for me and sat up in the water, a movement which caused it to stop and regard me from a distance instead of coming closer.

Pretty magical to say the least.

It dived, but I could still feel it watching me as I made for the shore.

I needed that magic today. It has been one of those days when everything feels pointless, all one way. I’ve been writing and rewriting for months… self motivation isn’t an issue. In fact the opposite is true, for those who are self employed or creatives like me I’m sure you’ll get that. Giving yourself a break can be non existent if you’re not careful and before you know it you’re feeling frazzled. A dunk in freezing water solves it all, as usual… and entertains the local wildlife too it seems. I’ve been writing about Atlantians and water folk. Perhaps the seal thought I was a Scottish Silkie… its been said before!
