The Power Of ‘Why?’

The Power of Why? ‘Why go to the river?’ Because it makes my heart sing…

As children ‘Why?’ is perhaps the most commonly asked question. As infuriating as it can be to the parent when every seemingly small thing is met with a look of wonder accompanied with ‘Why?’ for the child it is the fastest way of satiating their natural curiosity and an efficient way of learning to comprehend the world that they find themselves within.

Why?

Why brings answers to pretty much everything. Relationship dynamics, how the world works and can lead to an understanding not only of the world in general, but also an understanding of social expectations and of how we are to survive both physically and socially as emotive beings.

Sadly however as we grow we can lose this curiosity. We simply outgrow asking ‘Why’. Sure we may follow a path of exploration into a specific field or discipline. We may still seek to learn and understand areas that relate to work or our ‘field’ of expertise. But in other areas of our life we no longer look with the eyes of a child. We cease to look in amazement and ask Why. Emotions, rather than be explored and questioned are label and judged.

As adults, on the whole social expectation and ‘rules’ have sovereign power…often to the detriment of our emotional selves. We cease to ask Why and so understand and release emotional tensions…rather we judge them as inappropriate… We squash and squeeze them deep within our bodies and minds…then numb these out with alcohol, excessive food intake, drugs or excessive exercise regimes…so that we still feel in control and OK.

So… Why… not break this pattern? Bring back the power of why into your daily life. Question your motivations for your thoughts and actions. Ask yourself:

Why am I doing this?’ Then ’Why am I really doing this?’ Explore what thought patterns and agendas you are running behind your actions and see if these are truly serving your health and well being, or whether in fact they are leading to your overdoing things and causing you to feel overwhelmed.

Bring back the curiosity of Why into your life…and begin to free up you energies. Through Why you are able to break old restrictive patterns and free up energy for possible change.

Have fun exploring.
